Apraclonidine is a relatively selective alpha2-agonist. It lowers pressure by reducing the production of aqueous and is effective when used alone or in conjunction with other medications. In clinical trials with difficult to control glaucoma patients, Iopidine® 0.5% ophthalmic solution provided additional reductions in IOP in many patients. Iopidine 0.5% is currently approved for short-term use to lower eye pressure in patients on maximally tolerated therapy.
